New Alex Lions History
The New Alexandria Lions Club began
49 years ago in June 1959. The forty men, who started the club and who tirelessly dedicated
their time for the betterment of their community, should be commended.
Charter members
Dale Latimer, William Latimer and Vernon H. Long are still very active in the clubs'
activities. The Lions are 52 members strong today and have contributed over $1,200,000
to charities and the community at large.
The Lions raise money, each year,
to help fund 55 different charities, organizations and community projects. The Lions
budget for 2007 was $75,000. The Lions support state and national projects
helping the blind, deaf, and those with diabetes. We also provide funds to Lions
International Relief Organization, which helps victims of natural disasters.
The Lions were very instrumental in
providing a playground, numbers on the houses in the community, erected "Welcome to
New Alexandria" signs and provided a parking lot for baseball at the lower end of
town.
The Lions, instead of selling light
bulbs and brooms, decided to pursue other avenues for fund raising. In 1975, the
Lions decided to hold a "Variety and Rodeo Week". That year the rodeo was
the main event, but they also had a tractor pull, demolition derby, country western night
and a motorcycle competition. The rodeo and demolition derby were the mainstay of
the Lions fund raising until 1996 when the rodeo was phased out due to the lack of
support. The Demolition derbies are still going strong with 7 events each year.
Through the years, the Lions
continued to improve the grounds and add bleachers to accommodate more fans. The
growing trend in the 70's and 80's continued. The bleachers took 5 years to complete
and accommodate in excess of 3000 spectators. We also added aluminum bleachers in 2006 and 2007
In 1979, a large pole building
was added that now accommodates the Lions Care-A-Van. The Care a Van is a district project we do screenings for over 1000 clients per year for sight, hearing and galcoma free at health fairs and other Westmoreland County functions.
Our own, Richard Danesi served as
District Governor (1976-1977). Through his hard work and dedication, the District
14-E Lions raised enough money to purchase the Care-A-Van.
Barry Miller is the vice district governor for 2007-2008 and will serve as District Governor 2008-2009
As we look back on the history and
humble beginnings, we are proud of be part of a growing community.
We are truly the "Knights of
the Blind" and will continue to be true to our motto "We Serve".
